SECOND ELEVEN: Sussex defeated by Surrey in opening friendly match


Sussex’s Second Eleven were defeated in their opening three-day friendly match of the new season, as Surrey triumphed by 149 runs at the Blackstone Academy Ground, sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College.

After a run chase was set for Sussex, requiring 218 to win in 45 overs, they were bowled out for 68 in pursuit of their total.

Sussex declared 24 runs behind Surrey at the end of Day Two on 356 for 3, with Will Beer ending the innings unbeaten on 155.

Surrey then scored 193 for 4 from 45 overs, before declaring and leaving Sussex 218 to chase.

But Sussex succumbed to the spin of Amar Virdi, who took 5 for 6 from six overs as they were bowled out for 68. Joe Billings (pictured) top-scored for Sussex with 28.

The Second Eleven are next in action this Saturday when they face Oxfordshire at Blackstone in a one-day match. They will also entertain them on Sunday at the same venue.

FIXTURE CANCELLATION: On early versions of the 2017 Fixture Lists, there are two matches for the Second Eleven against Guernsey on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April at Blackstone. These matches have now been cancelled.
