SECOND ELEVEN: Sussex defeated inside two days11-Jul-2013
Sussex’s Second Eleven were swiftly defeated yesterday inside two days as their three-day friendly with Essex at Garon Park, Southend came to a premature conclusion.
With the hosts resuming yesterday six runs ahead of Sussex’s first innings total and with five wickets in hand, they were dismissed for 199 as skipper Jaik Mickleburgh top-scored with 74. Lewis Hatchett (pictured) finished with figures of 4 for 42 whilst Harry Finch claimed three wickets, Abi Sakande two and Sam Grant one.
But even though Essex only led their visitors by 48 runs, a collapse from Sussex to 81 all out advanced the match significantly on the second day. Finch top-scored with 26 whilst Leo Cammish was the only other batsman to make double-figures. Former England seamer Saj Mahmood did the main damage with the ball as he claimed figures of 4 for 26.
That left only 34 for the Essex batsmen to chase the openers reached their target comfortably to win the match by ten wickets.
The Sussex Seconds are next in action on Tuesday when they take on Gloucestershire in the Second Eleven Trophy at Frocester CC, before a three-day Championship match against the same opponents.
