SECOND ELEVEN: Sussex draw with Somerset in Championship23-Apr-2012
Sussex’s Second Eleven had to settle for a draw in their three-day Second Eleven Championship match with Somerset, which reached its climax on Friday at The PROBIZ County Ground.
Having ended Day Two on 117 for 3, 24 behind the visitors’ score of 141 all out, Sussex declared on 231 for 9 after 68 overs at the crease. Matt Machan continued his good form to hit 68, whilst Will Beer (41) and Naveed Arif Gondal (36) were the other main contributors. Max Waller’s 4 for 56 did the most damage with the ball for Somerset.
Sussex still smelt a slight chance of victory at this stage but despite four wickets from Chris Liddle, the stubborn resistance of the visitors saw them through to 155 for 6, as Will Jenkins’ half-century was the main deterrent to any further Sussex inroads. Beer and Kirk Wernars both picked up a wicket apiece but the match was called as a draw on Friday evening before the rain began to fall once again, which had already washed out the first day’s play.
Sussex gained 9 points from the match compared to Somerset’s 7. The Seconds were due in action again today, to take on Glamorgan in a Second Eleven Trophy Match away at Panteg CC. However, this has already been cancelled due to the weather and they will attempt to begin their three-day Championship match tomorrow (Tuesday) at the same venue.
The match is due to start at 12.00pm and you can follow their progress HERE via the Sussex Seconds’ Twitter feed.
Another Second Eleven fixture has been announced for the 2012 season. Sussex will take on Ireland 'A' in a three-day Friendly match at The Sutton Winson Academy Ground, Blackstone (near Henfield), between Tuesday 4th and Thursday 7th September with a 10.30am start on each day. Entrance, as always at Second Eleven matches, will be FREE
