SECOND ELEVEN: Sussex in strong position after Day One

Sussex’s Second Eleven were bowled out for 267 on Day One of their three-day Championship match with Surrey at Arundel Castle before reducing their visitors to 51 for 4 before the close.

Matt Machan (31) and Will Beer (36) were the main contributors in the top order along with Callum Jackson (29) and Jimmy Anyon (37) but it was Sam Grant – batting at number nine – who hit an unbeaten 52 and also shared a tenth-wicket partnership of 57 with Elliott Hooper (30).

Anyon (pictured) then did the main damage with the ball taking three wickets for only eleven runs to rip apart the Surrey top-order and leave the visitors on 51 for 4 at the end of the day, as Grant took the other wicket.
