SECOND ELEVEN: Sussex seal thrilling Championship win over Somerset

Sussex’s Second Eleven won a thrilling Championship match yesterday on the third and final day against Somerset at Taunton Vale, as Harry Finch starred with the bat, and Stuart Whittingham did the damage with the ball.

Going into the final day’s play, Sussex held a mammoth lead of 338 runs and batted on from 177 for 3 to 212 for 6 before declaring. Finch made an excellent 102 whilst Will Beer (38) and Craig Cachopa (25) chipped in to boost the total.

That set Somerset a huge last-day target of 374 to win the match, and when Whittingham (pictured) ripped through the top-order to take the first five wickets, and reduce the hosts to 27 for 5, it looked as though Sussex were in for a comfortable victory.

But a 216-run partnership between Max Waller (97) and Jim Allenby brought the hosts back into the game. Allenby, who was eventually dismissed for 121, also put half-century stands together with Dominic Bess and Liam Redrup, but it was Sussex who held their nerve and took the last wicket with only four runs needed for victory. Whittingham finished with figures of 6 for 69 whilst Lewis Hatchett (2 for 74) and Michael Rippon (1 for 35) were the other wicket-takers.
