SECOND ELEVEN: Sussex seal Trophy victory over Somerset18-Apr-2012
Sussex’s Second Eleven got off to a flying start in the Second Eleven Trophy with victory over Somerset at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove yesterday.
With the heavy rain in the morning causing the match to be reduced to 33 overs per side, the visitors won the toss and inserted Sussex to bat. The hosts then proceeded to defy the conditions and made 249 for 4 from their allotted overs once played finally got underway at 1.15pm.
Matt Machan led from the front. His unbeaten 86, opening the batting, came from 98 balls and included 9 fours. He was ably assisted by Naveed Arif Gondal and Andy Hodd who both hit 29 before Will Adkin smashed 54 from only 27 balls – an innings which contained 2 fours and a massive 5 sixes propelled Sussex to a more than competitive total.
In reply, Somerset never really looked like making a strong challenge for the total and were dismissed for 137 in little more than 28 overs. Will Beer was the main aggressor with the ball with his leg-spin claiming 4 for 24. Left-arm seamer Lewis Hatchett, who opened the bowling picked up figures of 3 for 21 whilst fellow left-armer Chris Liddle’s 2 for 24 completed the innings.
Sussex now face Somerset in a three-day Championship match at The PROBIZ which is set to begin this morning at 11.00am. However heavy rain this morning looks as though the start will be delayed.
