SECOND ELEVEN: Victory for Sussex on final day against Durham

Harry Finch struck 82 as Sussex won by four wickets at Preston Nomads

Sussex’s Second Eleven pulled off a remarkable victory this week in their three-day friendly with Durham at Preston Nomads CC.

After the visitors had been reduced to 109 for 7, left-armer Lewis Hatchett added another two wickets to his haul of four from the previous day to help dismiss Durham for 196.

He finished with figures of 6 for 56 whilst Matt Hobden claimed 2 for 39, and George Garton and Will Beer picked up a wicket apiece.

That set Sussex a target of 243 to win the match and they reached their goal for the loss of six wickets. Harry Finch (82) was the mainstay of the innings as he put on 97 for the second wicket with Tom Haines (67).

Callum Jackson (23) had earlier chipped in but despite a mini middle-order collapse, Finch and trialist David Wainwright (35 not out) put on 64 for the sixth wicket to help Sussex over the line with only a couple of overs remaining in the day, as Jonty Jenner (an unbeaten 14 from 6 balls) was also in form.

Sussex’s Second Eleven are back in action next Wednesday (9th September) when they welcome a combined Hampshire & Surrey XI to the Academy Ground, Blackstone in a three-day friendly match.

Sussex 2nd XI (223 all out and 243 for 6) beat Durham 2nd XI (269 all out and 169 all out) by four wickets.
