SECOND ELEVEN: Victory over Somerset in Trophy22-May-2013
The Sussex Second Eleven got their week off to a flying start yesterday with victory over Somerset in their Second Eleven Trophy match at the Taunton Vale Sports Club.
After the hosts won the toss and asked a much-changed Sussex line-up to bat first, the visitors made 255 for 7 from their allocated 40 overs. Sussex included a handful of trialists in their side and Nathan Hawkes, formerly on the books at Leicestershire and Norhamptonshire, was the star of the show hitting 110 from 107 balls.
He was ably supported by Bilal Shafayat (37), skipper Will Beer (24, pictured) and Ben Shoare of the Academy (22). Amjad Khan also smashed 28 from 16 balls down the order to boost the final total.
In reply, some tight bowling from Sussex restricted to Somerset to only 169 for 8 from the 40 overs. Another two trialists took the plaudits with the ball. Paul Hindmarch, who has played two games for the Unicorns this season in the Yorkshire Bank 40, took 3 for 14 whilst former Worcestershire spinner Shaftab Khalid claimed figures of 3 for 24 as Sussex triumphed by 86 runs.
