SECOND ELEVEN: Victory over Surrey once again at Blackstone02-May-2013
Sussex’s Second Eleven were victorious in the second of their one-day matches against Surrey yesterday, as they beat their neighbours by seven wickets at The Sutton Winson Academy Ground, Blackstone.
Batting first, Surrey made 222 for 6 from their 40 overs as Chris Liddle (pictured) claimed figures of 3 for 43 whilst Lewis Hatchett also picked up two wickets. Tom Jewell top-scored for the visitors, making 61.
In reply, Sussex’s opening pair of Joe Gatting (26) and Matt Machan (25) both chipped in but it was trailist Bilal Shafayat who stole the show, smashing 104 from only 71 balls to lead the hosts to victory.
Fellow trialist Scott Elstone made 41 from 44 balls whilst Harry Finch was unbeaten on 16 as Sussex made their target with nearly 8 overs to spare.
The Seconds are in action on Bank Holiday Monday when they travel to Radlett to take on Middlesex in the Second Eleven Trophy (12.00pm). The three-day Championship game will follow from Tuesday onwards.
