SECOND ELEVEN: Wells and Beer star in Trophy victory01-Jul-2014
Sussex’s Second Eleven won their 50-over Trophy Match with Essex yesterday by 49 runs at Garon Park in Southend.
Luke Wells starred for Sussex as he hit 94 in Sussex’s total of 240 all out from 46 overs after being inserted to bat. There were useful contributions from Matt Machan (26), Harry Finch (30) and skipper Will Beer (28). Tom Craddock was the pick of the bowlers for Essex with 3 for 36 whilst former England seamer Saj Mahmood took two scalps.
Greg Smith led the hosts’ reply with a knock of 85 but early wickets had already slowed their response and they were bowled out for 191 inside 40 overs. Matthew Hobden claimed figures of 3 for 51 but the leg-spin of Beer was the real determining factor as he took 4 for 25. Chris Liddle, Tim Moses and Fynn Hudson-Prentice all took a wicket apiece.
