SECOND ELEVEN: Wells and Salt light up Sussex's second innings


Sussex’s Second Eleven put in a commanding performance in their two-day friendly match at The Blackstone Academy Ground, sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College, yesterday.

Resuming overnight on 165 for 3, Sussex went on to make 274 for 9 declared in their first innings, with Michael Rippon hitting an unbeaten 42 from 57 balls to boost the lower order.

Surrey then batted for 38 overs, making 121 for 5 declared as Lewis Hatchett (3 for 35) starred with the ball for Sussex, and Luke Wells also claimed a wicket. Zafar Ansari, who was denied a winter place with the England squads due to injury, scored an unbeaten 47 for Surrey.

Sussex then took to the crease once again and in only 25 overs, made 180 for 3. Wells (pictured) top-scored with 86 from 82 balls, with five sixes and nine fours, and fellow opening partner Phil Salt smashed 66 from only 35 deliveries, with four sixes and seven fours.

The Second Eleven are next in action on Monday 25th April when they take on Worcestershire in a three-day friendly match at Kidderminster.
