SECONDS: Sussex struggle against Middlesex


Stuart Whittingham took three wickets for Sussex at Richmond

Sussex Seconds are up against it after the first day of the Championship match against Middlesex at Richmond.

The hosts won the toss and made 356 with Nick Sowter, who came in at No.9, scoring an unbeaten 122 from just 92 balls with 19 fours and a six. Earlier, opener Max Holden had made 84. Stuart Whittingham took 3 for 57 and Nick Oxley 3 for 66 while Ollie Robinson, who is continuing his comeback from injury, picked up 2 for 43.

In reply, Sussex were struggling at stumps on 64 for 5 after left-armer Tom Barber took 4 for 12 with the new ball.

Sussex were 9 for 4 at one stage before Ajmal Shahzad and Alex Woodland put on 53 for the fifth wicket. Shahzad was eventually lbw to Ravi Patel just before stumps, leaving Woodland 24 not out.

The game resumes at 11am on Tuesday.
