SQUAD NEWS: Beer handed opportunity with Sussex partners Oxfordshire

It has been announced that Sussex’s Will Beer will join Oxfordshire’s 2015 Unicorns Championship Squad for their six three-day minor counties league fixtures, subject to him not being selected in the Sussex first-team.

The arrangement has come about as one of the facets of Sussex’s partnership with the Oxfordshire Cricket Board, which was announced in 2013. This ground-breaking partnership has already seen Sussex Cricket’s coaching staff working with Oxfordshire’s players.

The move will enable 26 year-old Beer, who starred in last season’s NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup campaigns, to play cricket in a fresh environment and also to bat regularly in the top five in red-ball cricket. He will still however be key to Sussex’s first-team plans in 2015.

Sussex’s Professional Cricket Manager Mark Robinson said, “It is a good opportunity for Will to be a key player for Oxfordshire, with the opportunity to bat in the top order and bowl some valuable overs, and help further his claims to be a four-day regular. Will has played a lot of second team cricket and both Will and I think that four or five games in a new environment will be a good stimulus for him. He will of course at any time be available to play for Sussex and we will closely monitor his form and progress whilst he is not with us.”

Luke Ryan, senior team captain and Business Manager for the Oxfordshire Cricket Board, said, “Will has been put forward because of the high standards of professionalism and to fill a specific gap in our squad. I am convinced that our most experienced players and our youngsters alike will benefit greatly from playing alongside first-class county players, and we will continue to fast-track our best young talent into the senior team at every opportunity.”
