STUMPS & HIGHLIGHTS: Only 17 overs possible on Day Two at Hove12-May-2014
Only 17 overs were possible on Day Two of Sussex’s LV=County Championship match with Durham at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground as heavy rain fell at Hove.
The sun shone on a glorious early morning at BN3 but the clouds gathered for the 11.00am start and the players left the field after only one over, with Sussex resuming on their relatively mammoth 441 for 5.
A resumption at 11.50am then brought about a mini collapse. Luke Wright managed to creep past his highest first-class score after yesterday’s heroics before he nicked Chris Rushworth behind for 188.
Ashar Zaidi followed second ball through the same method before Ben Brown was bowled by Mark Wood for 163, adding 11 runs to his overnight score. Not only was this his first-class best, but the highest ever score by a Number 7 batsman for Sussex.
As Durham aimed to finish the job, Jimmy Anyon was the final wicket to fall in the day as was caught by Kumar Sangakkara off Wood for a useful 23. Sussex reached 500 but shortly before lunch heavy rain began to fall and despite several inspections in the late afternoon, the players never re-emerged and play was eventually abandoned at around 5.30pm.
The score currently stands at 505 for 9 and play is scheduled to resume at 11.00am tomorrow morning.
