STUMPS AND HIGHLIGHTS: Sussex beaten in tight affair at Hove28-Jun-2013
A crowd of in excess of 6,400 watched Sussex Sharks lose a thrilling affair by only 10 runs to Surrey in their opening Friends Life t20 clash at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground this evening.
The hosts batted first and were inspired by a knock of 42 from 33 balls by opener Jason Roy who was eventually removed by Chris Liddle, who finished with figures of 2 for 19 from his three overs.
Chris Jordan and Dwayne Smith also claimed two wickets apiece as the visitors closed on 157 for 6 from their 20 overs.
The Sharks looked good for their run chase in patches but when Smith was trapped lbw by Jade Dernbach in the 6th over they had been reduced to 44 for 3. Rory Hamilton-Brown’s 34 and Michael Yardy’s impressive 44 were the mainstays of the innings, and when Scott Styris (35) was in full flow, hitting three sixes, it looked as though the pendulum had swung in Sussex’s favour.
But a tight last over from Dernbach, which Sussex needed 15 from, ensured that the two points headed back to the Kia Oval.
