STUMPS: Sussex close in on Warwickshire total

Sussex closed in on Warwickshire’s first innings score at The County Ground, Hove today as another slow day came to a close amid gorgeous sunshine, however it increasingly looks as though the match will fizzle out into a draw.

Luke Wells and Michael Yardy were unbeaten overnight and the former captain was the first to go, caught behind by former Sussex man Tim Ambrose off the bowling of tall Irishman Boyd Rankin.

After Wells’ exploits at The Oval last week, where he hit a double-century against Surrey, it was hoped that the young left-hander could go on to a second successive three-figure score but it wasn’t to be as he was yorked by Rankin for 96.

The day was set for a Matt Prior cameo and his flashing blade produced seven fours as he hit 42 from only 40 balls until he nicked Chris Wright behind to Ambrose - whilst Rory Hamilton-Brown looked to bed in for some runs until he was adjudged leg-before to hand Chris Woakes his only wicket so far.

Ed Joyce looked to be in good nick and had played himself in nicely for 42 until Tom Milnes struck, and despite Chris Jordan becoming Rankin’s third wicket as he flashed behind to Chopra at slip, the afternoon’s batting remained solid thanks to the innings of Ben Brown.

The youngster has been playing as a batsman in this match with Prior regaining the gloves and he ended the day unbeaten on 82 – having put on 56 with James Anyon.

Sussex (416 for 7), trail Warwickshire (453 all out) by 37 runs
