HIGHLIGHTS & STUMPS: Sussex edge ahead of Derbyshire03-Aug-2013
Sussex moved 51 runs ahead of Derbyshire by the Close of Play on Day Two at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, Hove today as they bowled out Derbyshire for 274.
With the hosts all out for 314 at Stumps on Day One, the visitors were at one stage reduced to 139 for 6 but a captain's innings of 97 from Wayne Madsen spared their blushes as they passed the follow-on target. He was trapped leg-before by Monty Panesar three runs short of a deserved century.
Chris Jordan (pictured bowling from the Cromwell Road End today) picked up his 50th LV=County Championship wicket of the season when he tempted Tim Groenewald into edging to Michael Yardy at slip, and despite the rearguard resistance Peter Burgoyne, who was unbeaten on 62, Derbyshire were eventually dismissed leaving Sussex seven overs to bat. Jordan claimed figures of 3 for 73 whilst Steve Magoffin, Luke Wright and Monty Panesar all picked up two wickets apiece.
Sussex, with a lead of 40, couldn’t quite manage to negotiate the remaining overs without losing a wicket as Chris Nash was bowled middle-stump by Groenewald. But the lead of 51 overnight could be crucial going into Day Three, which begins at 11.00am tomorrow morning.
