HIGHLIGHTS & STUMPS: Sussex into the lead against Durham at Hove24-Sep-2013
Sussex fought back on Day One of their LV=County Championship Division One clash with Durham at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, Hove today.
Durham, who have already sealed the position of title-winners in this year’s Championship, were bundled out for 164 by Sussex as James Anyon and Chris Jordan (pictured) starred with five and four wickets respectively.
In reply the hosts were reduced to 90 for 5 but some incredible counter-attacking play by Luke Wright, who ended the day unbeaten on 74 from only 60 balls, ensured Sussex had a narrow lead of 22 by the end of the day’s play which came at nearly 6.30pm in the late September sun.
They had lost Chris Nash third ball and Michael Yardy in the third over of the innings; both without scoring, but a 50-run partnership between Ed Joyce and Luke Wells put the reply back on track. Usman Arshad removed Joyce and Matt Prior (16) before Ben Stokes had Wells caught behind for 20 with Sussex in trouble on 90 for 5. However Wright was in blistering form to put Sussex in the lead.
Sussex had earlier bowled their visitors out for 164. Anyon finished the innings with superb figures of 5 for 44 whilst Jordan, who was returning to the Sussex line-up following his exploits with the England one-day side, took 4 for 50.
