HIGHLIGHTS AND STUMPS: Sussex off to flying start with victory over Middlesex09-Apr-2014
Sussex began the LV=County Championship season in emphatic style as they sealed a huge victory over Middlesex at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, Hove today, by an innings and 127 runs.
The visitors resumed on 57 for 1 this morning hoping that on the fourth day of the play that they would be able to save this match, as they still trailed Sussex by 224 runs. But incredible spells of bowling from Jimmy Anyon, Jon Lewis and Steve Magoffin, with the Aussie the pick of the three taking 5 for 56, Middlesex were bowled out for only 154 at lunchtime.
Chris Rogers battled hard for 41 but once he edged behind to Ben Brown off Jimmy Anyon then the wickets began to tumble. Middlesex lost their next seven wickets for only 33 runs and despite a last-wicket rally from Tim Murtagh and Steven Finn, the latter went for one big hit too many and Magoffin cleaned up his stumps to seal a win shortly after 1pm on the final day.
Sussex now focus on a trip to Edgbaston to face Warwickshire in their next LV=CC encounter which begins on Sunday.
