STUMPS: Sussex remove three on frustrating day weather-wise27-Apr-2014
A day that was heavily curtailed by rain at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground saw Somerset reach 83 for 3 against Sussex, at the close of play on Day One of the LV=County Championship Division One clash, with only 32 overs possible.
Due to on and off rain throughout the day and latterly a wet outfield at the Sea End of the ground, play eventually got underway at 4.30pm after Ed Joyce had won the toss for Sussex and asked the visitors to bat.
They were reduced to 0 for 1 when Chris Jordan struck with his first ball to remove Chris Jones caught behind by Ben Brown, but Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton (41) put on 78 before the latter edged behind to Brown from Steve Magoffin.
Nightwatchman Jamie Overton also fell before the close as he nudged Jordan to Michael Yardy in the slips who took a superb one-handed catch. Somerset even deployed a second nightwatchman in the shape of Alfonso Thomas who saw out the last few deliveries with Trescothick who will be unbeaten on 39 when play resumes tomorrow at 11.00am
