STUMPS: Wright and Brown make hay, and history, at Hove11-May-2014
Luke Wright and Ben Brown put together a so far unbroken partnership of 326 today at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, Hove as they both hit centuries on Day One against Durham.
Sussex recovered from 115 for 5 to finish the day 441 for 5 as Wright saw through to an unbeaten 183, four runs shy of his highest first-class score; whilst Brown surpassed his previous best of 112 by reaching stumps 152 not out.
Durham had this morning won the toss on a windy day at Hove and inserted Sussex to bat and the early signs for the match looked ominous for the hosts, as the reigning champions reduced Sussex to 115 for 5.
And nobody could have predicted the impact that the pair of Wright and Brown were to make at the crease. Sussex’s top five had all made starts at the crease, particularly skipper Joyce who looked to continue his good form by striking four boundaries in his 21 before he was bowled by Usman Arshad.
Wright, now only four runs away from his highest first-class score overnight, and Brown, who surpassed his previous best of 112 against Derbyshire at Horsham in 2010, raced to the highest ever sixth-wicket partnership for Sussex, beating that of Duleepsinjhi and Tate in 1930. It is also the record sixth-wicket stand for any county against Durham, who suffered the loss of Graham Onions today who incurred a back injury after 11 overs.
An astonishing 27 and 20 fours respectively, the pair will resume at the wicket tomorrow with Sussex 441 for 5. Play is due to begin at 11.00am.
