SUSSEX SENIORS: Over-50s through to ECB semi-final

Sussex’s over-50’s XI have reached the semi-finals of the ECB 50+ County Championship, following a dramatic victory over Essex in the quarter-finals recently.

They restricted Essex to 189 for 9 from their 45 overs and knocked the runs off from the final ball of the game in a thrilling affair. Viren Patel was the pick of the bowlers for Sussex taking 4 for 53 whilst opener Martyn Ford top-scored in the reply with 47.

Sussex qualified from the south-east group as runners-up (seven matches) and the run has also seen them defeat Suffolk in the last 16 who were the only side up to that point to have a 100% record.

The semi-final will see Sussex host Yorkshire at Mayfield Cricket Club in a 1.00pm start, with again the match a 45 overs per side game.

Hugh Milner, the Sussex Senior Cricket Team Manager said, "Sussex beat a very strong Essex side by two wickets. To restrict Essex to that score was a great achievement. Viren Patel took 4 for 53 and Ian Jones 3 for 32, backed up by Steve Harris with 2 for 41.

"It was a nail-biting finish with the two runs required being hit off the last ball by Goff Baker to secure the win. A good opening partnership of 51 between Martyn Ford and Raj Sharma laid the foundations with Martyn finishing on 47 and Raj 20. Ian Jones made an unbeaten 28 in 17 balls; Dave Robertshaw 26; and Steve Harris hit 21 off 19 balls."
