Sussex closed on 137 for 3 lastnight after earlier bowling out the reigning champions for 124. James Anyon starred by taking 5 for 36 whilst overseas debutant Steve Magoffin and Amjad Khan both picked up two wickets apiece.
The hosts reduced Sussex to 15 for 3 in reply but Ed Joyce (48*) and skipper Michael Yardy (70*) steadied the ship to help the visitors take a first innings lead.
