Captain Harry Finch and Will Beer shared a stand of 83 on the first day against South Africa A at Arundel Castle.

After winning the toss, Finch led out a Sussex side including three players making their first-class debuts – Jonty Jenner, wicketkeeper Jake Hutson and Liam Smith – and they began positively against a South Africa side fresh from victory over Hampshire last week and preparing for next week’s four-day game against England Lions at Canterbury.

On a slow wicket, South Africa off-spinner Dane Piedt, who has played seven Tests, was in action before the first hour but Finch and Beer were into their stride by then.

Finch drove the ball sweetly, particularly through the covers, and Beer was equally punishing when the attack dropped short.

The breakthrough came in the 23rd over when Willem Mulder, with his third delivery, trapped Beer lbw for 28 as he shuffled across the line.
The medium-pacer struck again in his next over when Finch (48) was late on a defensive shot and lost his middle stump.

Duane Olivier, who had taken the new ball, then returned for a second spell from the Park End and struck with successive deliveries. Phil Salt (5) was caught at point then Smith feathered his first ball to the keeper Rudi Second.

At lunch Sussex were 92 for 4 with Delray Rawlins and Jonty Jenner yet to score.
