WINTER: Sussex looking to box clever

The cricket might have stopped at Hove for the time being but the members of Sussex’s squad who haven’t dispersed to warmer climes are enjoying a taste of a different sport within their training as they embark on regular boxing sessions.

Sussex’s tie-up with Cheetahs Gym in Hove has seen the players who are currently still basing their training locally to box their way to an increased level of fitness over the winter as well as learning some new transferable skills to take them towards the new season.

Cheetahs Gym is owned by Mark Harper who has been both a supporter and a sponsor at Sussex for over a decade and is currently an Executive Member.

Sussex’s Strength and Conditioning Coach Nick Lee said, “Boxing at this stage of the off-season provides an excellent opportunity for the guys to learn a number of new transferrable skills and try something different.

“The nature of the sport is very good for co-ordination and both the feet and movement of the hip during combinations is very similar to that of a number of actions in cricket.

“Being able to use the facilities at Cheetahs is fantastic for the guys as it gets them away from the ground and keeps them fresh after a long season, as well as taking a number of them outside their comfort zone”.
