WINTER WATCH: Another round-up of action from Sussex players around the globe

Harry Finch hit a half-century for St George CC on Sunday

Harry Finch is one of a number of Sussex batsmen who are working with renowned batting coach Trent Woodhill this winter in Australia, and Finch was in fine form with the bat in match action this weekend.

He struck 77 from only 55 balls for Sydney-based St George as they beat Sutherland by two wickets in the NSW Premier Cricket Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup, a knock that included six fours and four sixes.

Phil Salt, who has also worked with Woodhill this winter and also plying his trade with St George, made 25 in the first innings of their Second Grade match with Parramatta on Saturday.

Luke Wright has also left Hove for Australia now in preparation for the Big Bash with the Melbourne Stars. In their warm-up match on Tuesday with the Wellington Firebirds, he hit 65 from 34 balls in a 69-run victory. The Stars face the Firebirds again in another warm-up clash on Wednesday.

Danny Briggs continues his winter season with Marcellin Old Collegians CC in Melbourne, and has taken 14 wickets in six matches at an average of 10.71.

Left-arm paceman Tymal Mills has now finished his stint in the Bangladesh Premier League with the Chittagong Vikings, and has teamed up with the Auckland Aces in New Zealand, for the McDonald’s Super Smash.

He made his debut in Sunday’s 22-run success over Otago Volts and took 1 for 27. The Aces are back in action this Sunday when they face the Canterbury Kings in Christchurch.

Mills and Chris Jordan have both been selected in the England T20 squad for the three-match series with India at the end of January/beginning of February, and Jordan also looks set to feature in Australia’s Big Bash, teaming up with the Adelaide Strikers for their opening two fixtures.

Young seamer Abi Sakande is continuing his winter in New Zealand in Nelson, Central Districts. Last weekend he took match figures of 4 for 83 as the Nelson Griffins beat Marlborough in a two-innings match in the Hawke Cup.

He was back in action for Wakatu on Saturday and claimed figures of 1 for 21 from ten overs, but his side were defeated by Nelson College by four wickets.
