WINTER WATCH: Mills in fine form as Auckland ace their weekend

Tymal Mills bowled two excellent spells for Auckland Aces at the weekend

Tymal Mills was in fine form this weekend as he helped Auckland Aces to back-to-back victories in the McDonald’s Super Smash, currently taking place in New Zealand.

The Aces beat Northern Districts at Hamilton on Saturday by 38 runs and Mills claimed economical figures of 1 for 19 from his four overs.

He then upped the ante on Sunday, taking 3 for 22 as Auckland beat Canterbury by five wickets at Eden Park, and have gone two points clear at the top of the table.

Danny Briggs has been amongst the wickets this week for Melbourne-based Marcellin Old Collegians. He claimed impressive figures of 2 for 7 from only four overs in their Kookaburra T20 Cup match with Mont Albert last Tuesday, but his side were defeated by 25 runs.

They were victorious this weekend however, with victory over Old Carey in the Wright Shield, and Briggs claimed miserly figures of 1 for 2 from six overs. He has now taken 19 wickets in all competitions this winter, at an average of only 10.63.

Phil Salt, who smashed 66 from 55 balls last weekend for Sydney-based St George, couldn’t quite recreate his form this weekend, as he made 16 in the first innings in their Second Grade match with Campbelltown-Camden.

Stiaan van Zyl is back in first-class action in South Africa following the conclusion of the CSA T20 challenge, but his Western Province side were beaten by seven wickets by North West in the Sunfoil 3-day cup. He picked up a wicket in the first innings and made an unbeaten 15 in WP’s second innings as they declared to set up the match.

The Big Bash is nearly upon us with the tournament beginning on Tuesday (20th December). Chris Jordan is playing for the Adelaide Strikers, who are one of the first teams in action when they face the Brisbane Heat on Wednesday, but Sussex skipper Luke Wright will have to wait until Boxing Day to begin his campaign, when Melbourne Stars face Hobart Hurricanes.

Sussex’s overseas signing Vernon Philander is currently preparing for South Africa’s Test series with Sri Lanka, and the first match begins on Boxing Day at Port Elizabeth.
