WINTER: Weekend round-up of Sussex's international stars13-Jan-2014
It was a mixed weekend for Sussex’s players around the globe as a busy few days of international cricket took place.
Chris Jordan was thrust into the limelight for England in their first One-Day International with Australia at The MCG but despite an accomplished bowling performance he couldn’t stop the tourists slipping to a six-wicket defeat. He took 1 for 50, with his wicket seeing him clean bowl Shane Watson but the Aussies chased down their target of 269.
The England Women’s Team were more successful beating their Australian counterparts in the only Ashes Test of the series. Sussex’s Sarah Taylor and Arran Brindle both helped England to a 61 run win over the hosts and now look forward to the ODI series and T20 matches.
The ICC World Cup Qualifiers are underway in New Zealand with plenty of Sussex interest. Matt Machan starred with both bat and ball for Scotland, taking 2 for 37 before scoring 34 with the bat but he couldn’t prevent them going down to a 17-run defeat to Hong Kong, who can include former Sussex Team Analyst Chris Pickett amongst their coaching set-up.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Michael Rippon was the star of the show for the Netherlands as he took 4 for 15 against Uganda as the European side coasted to a seven wicket victory.
Domestically, Luke Wright (below) continued his good form in the Big Bash, hitting 37 from 33 balls to inspire Melbourne Stars to a three-wicket win over Brisbane Heat on Saturday, whilst also chipping in with a wicket with the ball. Chris Nash is playing for Auckland in the HRV Cup in New Zealand, and on Friday took 2 for 22 before chipping in with 21 but his side were beaten by 40 runs by Northern Districts, as Scott Styris hit 43 for the victors.
