WOMEN: Sussex sign South African star for final Championship fixtures

Mignon du Preez

Sussex Women have made a huge signing for their final two games of the season this weekend, with South African International and Southern Vipers top order batsman, Mignon Du Preez joining the side.

Du Preez is currently in England playing in the Kia Super League for Southern Vipers, who have already claimed their spot in Finals Day at The 1st Central County Ground on Friday 1st September with a game to play.

Du Preez is a top order batsman who made her debut for South Africa in 2007 at the age of 17, before going on to captain her country between 2011 – 2016. She became the first South African woman to score 1,000 runs in T20 cricket, having played 67 matches. She is also the first South African woman to play 100 ODI matches, which she reached this summer in the ICC Women’s World Cup.

Sussex Women have their final Royal London One Day Championship games this weekend, where they face Berkshire at The 1st Central County Ground on Sunday followed up with their match against Middlesex away on Bank Holiday Monday.

These are two crucial games for the Sussex Women as they currently sit third from bottom in the table just ahead of Middlesex and Berkshire, so both games are must win matches for them to stay up in Division One of the Royal London One Day Championship, as two teams go down after this weekend.

Sussex will have a number of their Kia Super League players available to play this weekend which will boost the squad, as well as having new signing Mignon Du Preez who will strengthen the top order for Sussex.

As yet, it is not known if opening bowler, Freya Davies will be available or not for the games this weekend as it depends on whether Western Storm progress to the Kia Super League Finals Day next Friday.

Sussex Head Coach James Anyon said, “It is great to have South African and Southern Vipers player, Mignon Du Preez join the Sussex side for our final games of the season, she will bring a wealth of experience with her and she will be a great addition to the side this weekend and to our batting line up. It is great we have managed to get some of our players back from the super league this weekend which will bolster our side.

“It is going to be vitally important we bring our A game this weekend and perform in all areas as we need to go away with two wins to make sure we survive in division one of the championship. We know both games will be tough as both Berkshire and Middlesex are strong teams, but we need to take one game at a time and put in two of our best performances this season.”

Sussex take on Berkshire on Sunday at The 1st Central County Ground on Sunday from 11am, entry is FREE.

On Monday Sussex play Middlesex at Eastcote Cricket Club from 11am.
