WOMEN: Sussex Women Crowned T20 Champions!29-Aug-2012
The Sussex women finished their season off in style on Monday at the T20 finals day, by beating Yorkshire in the semi’s and then winning in style against Berkshire in the final, to be crowned T20 champions for the first time in three years.
The women started the morning off by facing Yorkshire and having lost the toss were put into bat. Sussex lost two early wickets, however, runs from Sarah Taylor (58 from 47 balls) Holly Colvin (28 from 24 balls) and Arran Brindle (18) helped Sussex rebuild and reach 130-6 off their 20 overs.
Yorkshire started well, putting on 33 for the first wicket, but Sussex bowled tightly and managed to put pressure on the Yorkshire batsmen throughout. After 20 overs, Yorkshire could only reach 113 for 8, with Sussex pick of the bowlers being Georgia Elwiss taking 3 for 9, Alexia Walker 3 for 29 and Izi Noakes 2 for 19.
Sussex then faced Berkshire in the final where they won the toss and elected to field. Sussex opening bowlers, Izi Noakes (3 for 5) and Georgia Elwiss (3-15) bowled with pace and accuracy, taking wickets at regular intervals. Two wickets for Holly Colvin and a wicket a piece for Arran Brindle and Alexia Walker meant Berkshire were bowled out for 52 in 18 overs.
Elwiss and Walker opened the batting and wasted no time in getting the runs, with Walker hitting 39 not out from just 18 balls and Elwiss 14 off 13 balls and reaching the total in 5.1 overs.
The Women have been unbeaten in all forms of the game this year and winning the T20 has capped off a fantastic season for the Sussex Women.
Sussex Women’s coach, Charlotte Burton said, “The players deserve to win the T20 this season, they have performed so well in all forms of the game and have been unbeaten in all forms of the game. It is a shame we couldn’t win the County Championship due to the weather playing a big part, but to finish as T20 champions is credit to all the players. I know they will come back hungry for more success next year and will look to win the double next year.”
There are 3 Sussex players selected for the NatWest Women’s T20 Series against West Indies this September, with Arran Brindle, Holly Colvin and Sarah Taylor all making the squad.
Also Sussex players, Hannah Phelps and Izi Noakes have been selected for the England Under 19s to take on Pakistan in two T20s this Saturday. Izi is currently on the Sussex Academy and Hannah was on the Academy last year.
