WOMENS: Sussex win The County Championship!!16-Sep-2013
The Sussex Women finished the season off in style yesterday by beating Yorkshire in the County Championship Final to be crowned County Champions for the sixth time in only ten years.
After the devastating loss last weekend in the T20 final against Kent the Women were more than determined to go out and win the County Championship on Sunday at Milton Keynes.
On what was an overcast day, with rain due later on it looked like winning the toss would be crucial; however Sussex lost the toss and were put into bat, and after 50 overs Sussex reached their biggest total of the season, 242 for 4, with Sarah Taylor 128 not out and 16 year-old Izzy Collis 51 not out, as they shared a partnership of 143.
It was Taylor’s fourth hundred for Sussex and easily one of her best as she played the ball all around the ground, timing it to perfection. She was well supported by England team-mate Arran Brindle earlier in the innings and of course Collis, who has already scored a number of centuries at Under-17 level.
Sussex knew that with the rain coming they had to make sure they kept Yorkshire under four an over in case the weather intervened. Opening bowler, Izi Noakes struck in the first over, taking the wicket of Yorkshire and England batsman Lauren Winfield with a catch behind by Taylor as Sussex went on to restrict Yorkshire to 36 for 1 after 10 overs.
They were further reduced to 42 for 3 before Chiara Green and Holly Colvin came into the attack to take one and two quick wickets respectively with their opponents now 109 for 6 off 27 overs.
Some tight, solid fielding by Sussex throughout the innings kept the pressure on Yorkshire which led to mistakes between the batsmen and two runs out from Collis proved this. A third wicket for Colvin saw Yorkshire 130 for 9 off 35 overs with 1 wicket needed by Sussex to be crowned County Champions, the heavens opened. Thankfully it wasn’t for long and the players went out determined to take that final wicket which they did with another run out.
Sussex Women’s Coach Charlotte Burton said, “We saved our best performance until the end. The players have played extremely well all season and every single player has put in performances throughout this year.
“It was a great innings by Taylor and Collis to put us in a good position and then everyone topped it off in the field and with the ball. I am very proud of the players, we have a great team and to come back fighting after last week’s T20 loss showed we have tremendous strength and character within our squad.”
It is not the end of the season for Sussex, as this weekend the Under-17s have a chance in following in the footsteps of the Women as they take part in the County Championship Final in Leamington Spa, to hopefully top off a great season for them after the T20 National Champions trophy.
In the last 10 years the Women have won the Championship six times; 2003, 04, 05, 08, 2010 and now 2013.
