WOMENS: Horsham claim Indoor crown21-Mar-2013
Horsham CC Women were crowned the champions of the second Women's Indoor League recently at The Deans Leisure Centre in Rottingdean.
The league was introduced by the Sussex Cricket Board last season. It had four clubs involved and saw Ansty CC as the first winners. This year the league was sponsored by the Deans Leisure Centre itself with seven clubs taking part; Ansty, Bells Yew Green, Chippingdale, Henfield, Horsham, Selsey and Steyning.
There were two leagues, with the winners which were Horsham and Ansty then competing in a final to determine the league champions.
Horsham batted first and posted 111 for 1, with Hannah Phelps, Jessica Saunders and Charlotte Walder all having to retire on 25.
Ansty kept up with the run rate with captain Natasha Sole retiring, but Horsham kept taking wickets at regular times and bowled and fielded tightly.
With Ansty needing 12 off the last over, Horsham kept the field tight and restricted Ansty to only four to win by eight runs and claim the champions' tag.
Sussex Women & Girls community coach, Charlotte Burton, who runs the league said, “It is great to see more clubs involved this year and to have the support from the Deans Leisure Centre, which has helped make the league a success.
"The league enables the clubs to play more cricket throughout the year and it is a highly competitive league which helps develop player’s skills ready for the summer matches. It will continue next year where we hope to have more clubs involved again.”
