WOMENS: Success for Brighton College and Oathall in Lady Taverners

20-Mar-2013

There has been plenty of Women’s and Girls Cricket taking place in Sussex recently despite the chilly weather, with indoor success in the Lady Taverners Finals.

The Lady Taverners Under-15 Indoor school competition has been running for the last eight years with the winner of each region reaching the National Final at Lord’s, and Brighton College were crowned champions of the Sussex section for the second year running.

Brighton College, Millais (Horsham), Oathall Community College (Haywards Heath), Ratton (Eastbourne) and Worthing High all won their group matches to reach the final. Each school played each other once and there were some extremely close matches that went down to the last over, but Brighton College managed to win all four of their matches to reach the Regional final.

Brighton College will now compete against schools from Suffolk, Middlesex, Surrey, Essex and Hertfordshire in the Regional Final which is actually being held in Sussex at St Bede’s Prep School in Eastbourne on Wednesday 24th April.

The Under-13 County final was held at St Bede’s recently and involved St Bede’s themselves, Brighton College, North Lancing Primary, Oathall Community College, Portslade Aldridge Community Academy and Tanbridge House, where all the schools played each other.

There were some close matches throughout the day, with many games going down to the last over and even a drawn match between St Bede’s and Tanbridge House. A tense final saw Brighton College lose out by one wicket to Oathall who will go on and to the Regional Final in Hertfordshire in April.

Sussex Women & Girls Community Coach, Charlotte Burton said, “The standard of cricket played by all the schools was exceptionally high this year, there was some very intelligent cricket played by the girls and this competition has shown how much girls cricket has moved on within the schools in Sussex.

“It is also great to see so many schools involved again, especially a number of new schools who have never taken part in the competition before.”
