WOMENS: Sussex begin season with back to back victories07-May-2014
Sussex began their quest to regain the Championship with back to back wins over the Bank Holiday Weekend in The Royal London One Day Women’s Championship.
They faced Essex on Sunday at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground and after losing the toss were asked to field. Essex started well with the bat, but mainly thanks to the bowling of Arran Brindle and Georgia Elwiss, were reduced to 78 for 6.
Georgia Adams was also amongst the wickets with her off spin, resulting in Sussex bowling out Essex for 116 with Brindle the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 for 16. Opening batsmen Elwiss and Adams got off to a flying start reaching their 50 partnership in the ninth over before Elwiss was caught at slip for a swift 36 from 40 balls. Adams was joined by captain Sarah Taylor and the 100 came up in the 19th over and two overs later Adams reached her half-century. The pair led the side home to a nine-wicket victory with Adams finishing on 56 and Taylor 22.
The squad didn’t have much time to rest as the next day they faced Warwickshire at St James's Montefiore CC in Ditchling, where on a green pitch Sussex lost the toss, but were happy to be sent into the field. Izi Noakes and Freya Davies opened the bowling tightly but it was Brindle and Elwiss who did the damage once more, reducing Warwickshire to 61 for 6 and although they did launch a recovery of sorts during the middle overs, they were dismissed for 118 with Elwiss taking 3 for 20.
Despite losing opener Adams early on, Sussex reached the 50-mark in the 12th over before Elwiss was dismissed for 21. However, Brindle and Taylor led Sussex to victory finishing on 34 and 41 respectively.
Sussex Women’s Director of Cricket Charlotte Burton said, “It’s a great way to start the season with two excellent performances from the team. We will take a lot from these two wins and hopefully keep the momentum going into our next match against Berkshire.
“Everyone put in good performances over the two days, in particular Georgia Adams with a great 56 in the first match, Arran Brindle and Georgia Elwiss taking six wickets each over the two days and Sarah Taylor with 41 on the second day, but as always it was a fantastic team effort all round.”
Sussex's next match is on Sunday 25th May away to Berkshire at Wokingham CC, followed by another away match to Nottinghamshire on Monday 26th May at Welbeck CC, Mansfield. Click HERE to view all of this season's fixtures.
