WOMENS: Sussex lose to Yorkshire but come back with a win against Kent11-Jun-2013
The Sussex Women had mixed results recently with a defeat to Yorkshire and a win over Kent. Having won the toss and electing to field against Yorkshire, Sussex restricted them to 179 for 9. The pick of the Sussex bowlers were Georgia Elwiss 3 for 47, Alexia Walker 2 for 34 and Izi Noakes 1 for 15.
In reply, Sussex made 172 in their run chase with Brindle (51) and Elwiss (36) being the main contributors. The game went to the final over, however Sussex fell 7 runs short of the Yorkshire total.
The next day Sussex had to pick themselves up and face last years County Champions, Kent, and claim a victory to still be in with a chance of being in the top two, to reach the Championship final.
Kent won the toss and elected to bat first, Sussex restricted Kent to 200 off their 50 overs, with Freya Davies taking 2 for 23 off 10 overs.
In reply, Elwiss (61) and Brindle (52 not out) continued where they left off with the bat the day before. Sussex eventually knocked off the total with three overs to spare with Elwiss and Georgia Adams (24 not out) seeing the innings home.
The victory against Kent means Sussex are still in the running for coming in the top two of the league and still have a chance of reaching the County Championship final as long as they win their final four matches.
Sussex Coach, Charlotte Burton said, “ The side were extremely disappointed and were hurting after the loss against Yorkshire, but to come back fighting the way they did, less than 24 hours later to beat Kent shows we have strong characters and a lot of determination in our team."
Sussex Women’s next match is on Sunday 23rd June against Nottinghamshire at St James Montefiore CC.
Meanwhile, three Sussex players have been named in the England Squad to face Pakistan in the ODI and T20 Series' next month. Arran Brindle, Georgia Elwiss and Sarah Taylor are all included in the 15-strong squad. For more information please click HERE
