WOMENS: Sussex prepare for opening two matches this weekend

Linsey Smith, seen here in action for the Southern Vipers, is set to make her debut on Monday against Warwickshire

Sussex's Women are preparing to start their season this Bank Holiday weekend with a double-header, away at Nottinghamshire on Sunday, and then against Warwickshire on Monday.

Sussex will look to go one better this season and will be aiming to finish top of the Royal London One-Day Cup table under new coach James Anyon and new skipper Georgia Adams, after finishing as runners-up last season.

They will be without England stars Georgia Elwiss, Danni Wyatt and Sarah Taylor as they are rested following their tour of Abu Dhabi, while new signing Linsey Smith will make her debut on Monday.

The side will have a young look to it this weekend with potentially 5 players making their debut. Along with Smith, 16 year-olds Ariana Dowse and Ella Wadey, 17 year-old spinner Nancy Harman and 18 year-old Lucy Western are all included in the squad.

Sussex will be without opening bowler Freya Davies who is currently finishing her final exams at Exeter University, and Izzy Collis who is injured.

New captain Adams said, “With the first county games fast approaching I couldn’t be more ready to get out on the pitch and get the season underway. As a team, we have a very exciting season ahead, with some new faces.

"It will be a great opportunity for young players to step up and show what they are made of in the absence of England players. I really believe that we have good depth to our squad, and this is one of our biggest strengths.

"We have put in a lot of hours in over the winter individually and as a team with James and Alexia, so I am confident we will have one of our best seasons yet and let the cricket do the talking”.

Sussex play Nottinghamshire on Sunday 30th April at Lady Bay Sports Club, and on Monday 1st May face Warwickshire at the Edgbaston Foundation Ground. Both games start at 11.00am.

The squad is as follows:

Flora Bertwistle
