WOMENS: Sussex see off Middlesex by four wickets at Hove

The Sussex Women secured their third win this season in the Royal London One-Day Championship, as they beat Middlesex at The County Ground on Sunday.

With five players missing due to international duties including Sarah Taylor and Georgia Elwiss with England, Erin Osborne with Australia and Georgia Adams and Freya Davies playing for the England Academy, it made Sussex's triumph all the more impressive.

Middlesex won the toss and elected to bat first and Sussex dismissed them for 151 in the 43rd over. Former England left-arm spinner Holly Colvin was the star of the show with the ball, taking 5 for 33 from her ten overs.

It was Colvin who had a great day with bat and ball to lead Sussex home with an unbeaten 25 after much of the top-order had chipped in with valuable runs to set up a four-wicket victory.

Sussex Women’s Coach Charlotte Burton said, “It was a great game of cricket by both sides on Sunday which made it into a competitive, enjoyable game to watch and I am sure the players will say that it was to play in too.

“It showed what depth we have in Sussex, missing five players and performing so well in all three areas of our game. It was one of our best performances this season, in particular our fielding, especially after that is what let us down in the T20 against Kent a few weeks ago.

“It is pleasing to see Holly take five wickets at Hove, but every single player played a part in this victory. Everyone who bowled did so tightly which put pressure on the opposition. We took some great catches which were difficult but we made them look easy and there was some sharp fielding throughout. Everyone contributed with the bat and it wasn’t easy out there because Middlesex did bowl well, it was just a good all round performance by the team.”

The victory means Sussex are currently third in the Royal London One-Day Championship, with a month’s break before their next one-day fixtures against Lancashire and Yorkshire. In the meantime they have their final T20 rounds coming up on 2nd and 16th August, where Sussex currently lie second in the league.
