WOMENS: Sussex strengthen Guernsey link28-Feb-2014
Sussex Womens skipper Sarah Taylor flew to Guernsey this week along with all-rounder Alexia Walker and Director of Women’s Cricket Charlotte Burton to coach Guernsey’s Womens and Girls team.
The trip was set up by Jason Shambrook, the Cricket Development Manager for Guernsey and Burton through the link Sussex have with the island's Cricket Board.
Sarah, Alexia and Charlotte spent three days working with the Guernsey Women’s team, developing their skills and knowledge of the game as many were new to cricket, with Guernsey only having set up the side the previous season. Guernsey also advertised a coaching session in schools and through the local press, and around 40 girls from the ages of 6 to 13 turned up at the ICG to be coached.
The idea of the three days was to get more girls playing cricket in Guernsey, so that when the players left they would continue with regular sessions for the girls who came along as well as develop the current Women’s team.
Burton said, "Working with Guernsey and helping them develop their Women & Girls cricket was brilliant. All the players we worked with were so keen to learn and take on board what was said to them. The facilities at the ICG were amazing and all at Guernsey made us feel so welcome. It is good to work in partnership through the link we have with them at Sussex and we are already in discussions on how we can try and get them over to the mainland next year and play in some sort of tournament as well as going out there and coaching again.”
