WOMENS: Sussex through to t20 Finals Day

01-Aug-2012

Sussex Women followed in the footsteps of their male counterparts yesterday by winning through to the National T20 Finals Day, to be held on Monday 27th August at Wokingham Cricket Club.

They have competed in the South Division One T20 competition over the past two days, where they played Surrey, Middlesex and Kent to earn their place.

On Monday, the Women faced Surrey in the morning and having lost the toss and were asked to field on what was a damp pitch, Sussex dominated with the ball and kept it extremely tight in the field to bowl Surrey out for only 41 in 19 overs, with Alexia Walker the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 12. Openers Georgia Adams and Georgia Elwiss wasted no time in getting the runs, reaching the score in 6.3 overs without a wicket down. Adams finishing on 23 and Elwiss 19.

Sussex then faced Middlesex in the afternoon and elected to field again. Sussex dominated with the ball and in the field once again and bowled Middlesex out for 61, with Arran Brindle taking 3 for 15 off her 4 overs. Elwiss was given out early this time, lbw for only 2 but Sarah Taylor joined Adams and looked in no danger as they reached the total inside 12 overs, with Adams finishing on 38 and Taylor 19.

On the second day, Sussex were due to face Kent twice, once in their group game and then again in the final, but due to overnight rain the first game could not be played, which meant they could only play their group game in the afternoon. Sussex were put into bat and lost the wicket of Adams early, but Elwiss and Taylor built a strong partnership and ran well together getting a number of quick 2s and 3s. Taylor soon reached her 50 off 10 overs, with Elwiss soon following with her first County T20 50 in 18 overs. Sussex made an impressive total after 20 overs, finishing on 142 for 4. England captain Charlotte Edwards started well for Kent, but Sussex kept their bowling tight and were attacking in the field which built pressure, eventually winning by 16 runs and being crowned T20 South Division One champions.

The Women now follow the men and are through to the T20 final which will be held on Bank Holiday Monday at Wokingham CC, where we hope Sussex can get a double victory that weekend.
