WOMENS: Two victories for Sussex in Bank Holiday double-header

Sussex’s Women had a successful Bank Holiday Weekend with two wins out of two over Warwickshire and Surrey respectively.

At Wellesbourne CC on Sunday, near Stratford Upon Avon, Sussex won the toss and elected to field first against Warwickshire.

By taking advantage of some overcast conditions Warwickshire were reduced to 82 for 5 with Alexia Walker claiming three of the wickets – although Sussex had lost Sarah Taylor behind the stumps due to injury.

Sussex managed to claim maximum bowling points as Warwickshire finished the innings on 135 for 9 off their 50 overs, with Holly Colvin ending the innings with figures of 3 for 16 whilst Walker picked up 3 for 24.

There were also two wickets for Georgia Elwiss inbetween spells behind the stumps with the gloves for the injured Taylor.

Despite the innings getting off to a poor start with Arran Brindle and Izzy Collis going cheaply, Hannah Phelps (36) and Elwiss (27) starred as Sussex reached their target with plenty of overs to spare to win by five wickets.

On Monday, Sussex returned to The County Ground to face neighbours Surrey, who won the toss and elected to bat at a sun-drenched Hove. They made 181 for 6 from their 50 overs with the wickets shared around amongst the bowlers.

The two Georgia’s, Adams and Elwiss opened the batting and after 10 overs Sussex had reached 59 without loss.

The hundred opening partnership between Elwiss and Adams came up in the 21st over, shortly before Adams was given out LBW for 26.

Hannah Phelps joined Elwiss at the crease, and Elwiss went on to reach her maiden hundred for Sussex in style with a four through cover and a great display of batting to a large crowd at Hove.

Phelps and Elwiss finished the innings and lead Sussex to a nine-wicket victory in the 35th over, with Phelps finishing on 21 and Elwiss 105 not out from 121 balls with 9 fours.

Sussex’s Womens Coach and Director of Cricket Charlotte Burton said, “It is great to get the season underway with two wins under our belt with two outstanding performances from the team.

“Georgia Elwiss’ hundred was exceptional; she played with ease and style and showed that she can bat in any position.

“All the players did well this weekend and the team are looking forward to their next set of matches which again will be a double header against Yorkshire and Kent on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday at the end of May.”
