WOMENS: Under-17s finish as County Champions24-Sep-2013
The Sussex Under 17 Girls topped off their season in style and added another trophy to their collection this summer. After winning the National T20 competition last month, they claimed the County Championship on Sunday after beating Devon in the Final.
Firstly the girls faced Lancashire on Saturday in the semi-final to claim their spot in the final. Sussex batted first and scored 134 all out, with contributions from Paige Scholfield (40), Izzy Collis (27) and Charlotte Walder (23). The girls bowled and fielded tightly and dismissed Lancashire for 90, with Kezia Barrett taking 3 for 4 and Collis 3 for 21.
In the final, Sussex lost the toss and were put into bat, with Collis and Megan Janman opening. But soon Collis was out LBW for 12 and Janman soon followed after being caught for 13. Captain Freya Davies and Scholfield, who has been in form with the bat all season, came in and played some impressive shots, working the ball into areas and running well together. Both players looked in good form and built up a solid partnership of 75 before Davies was caught for 21.
Scholfield soon reached her 50 and continued to build an innings with Abi Freeborn, putting Sussex in a good position. Freeborn scored a quick 13 before being bowled, and then Scholfield was joined by attacking batsman Walder.
Scholfield strikes the ball hard and wasn’t afraid to hit over the top, she even smashed two sixes over the fence and out of the ground. The pair put on 58 before Scholfield was caught in the last over for 94 off 101 balls. Sussex finished with 209 for 5 with Walder finishing on 19 not out off 20 balls.
Sussex started well with the ball with Janman taking two early wickets. Ellen Burt came onto bowl and struck in her first over and then following up with a further two wickets to leave Devon reeling on 48 for 6.
With some tight bowling and fielding throughout the innings and putting more pressure on Devon, Anna Harris struck with a run out and Devon were further reduced to 87 for 8. The West Country outfit kept Sussex waiting and started to put pressure back onto Sussex, but with some patience and some perseverance, Collis took the 9th wicket with a stumping and then Burt took her fourth wicket (4 for 22) and Sussex were crowned County Champions.
Sussex Director of Cricket Charlotte Burton said, “The Under-17s have played some impressive cricket this season and every player in that squad has played a role in winning the double. They have been unbeaten all season in the County Championship and they deserve to win both the T20 and Championship as they have put in the hard work all year.
The way they have come together as a team has helped them succeed in both competitions. The Sussex WCA and I are extremely proud of the girls; to win the double in one season is a fantastic achievement.”
