YB40: Free game at Hove hailed a success

Over 5,800 people attended the first ever ‘free’ Yorkshire Bank 40 match at The County Ground, Hove on Bank Holiday Sunday.

The day was regarded as a huge success with many of the crowd making their first visit to the County Ground. Visitors enjoyed lots of attractions in addition to the cricket under sunny skies. These included the return of the Sussex Cricket Greene King Beer Festival, a range of new food offerings as well as face painting, balloon modelling and stilt walkers for the younger visitors.

The day was possible due to the generous sponsorship by LED Europe, providers of the ground’s new digital scoreboard and LED perimeter advertising boards.

Zac Toumazi, Chief Executive of Sussex County Cricket Club, said “This was the first time we have opened the ground for free.

“The objective was to engage with as many new people as possible so that they could enjoy the day. We have a loyal support from existing members, sponsors and partners which form the bedrock of the club but we must recruit the next generation.

“This event was the first of a number of awareness initiatives that we are embarking on and we look forward to putting The County Ground firmly on the map and making it uppermost in people’s minds when deciding how to spend their leisure time.”

Ed de Lucy, Managing Director of LED Sport Europe, said “Despite the result, it was good to see everyone enjoying the game with great weather. The LED screen looked fantastic and I can’t wait to see this at night during the Twenty20 campaign.”
