YOUTH: Sussex U-17 boys share Championship title

Sussex are the Specsavers ECB Under-17 County Champions, sharing the title with Northamptonshire following a drawn final at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground earlier this week.

In a severely weather-affected match, Sussex won the toss and batted first on Tuesday. They made an imposing 443-8 from the 104 overs available to them in the first innings.

Wicket-keeper and opening-batsman, Joe Bilings top-scored with 134. There were half-centuries for Nick Smith, Tom Gordon and Will Sheffield, the latter hitting 76 from just 71 balls.

After no play was possible on Wednesday, Northants made it to 111-1 off 28.3 overs on the third and final day before rain brought the match to an early conclusion.

Henry Crocombe – fresh from his appearance for London & East in the Super-4 competition for the country’s outstanding Under-17s – was Sussex’s wicket taker. Abdullah Nazir bowled an extremely economical spell, his six overs going for just six runs.

Speaking after the match, Sussex Academy Director, Carl Hopkinson said: “I’m extremely proud of the boys. Their dedication and hard-work has paid dividends and they fully deserve the title of County Champions.

“It’s frustrating that the weather prevented an outright winner being decided, particularly after we had posted such a good total in our first innings.

“Nonetheless, the squad should be very proud of their achievement. It’s especially satisfying given how many of the boys have come up through the Sussex age groups.

“Congratulations also to Northamptonshire.”
