Aussie keeper backs Prior
Graham Manou has backed Matt Prior to remain England’s No. 1 wicketkeeper as long as he does not let his glovework standards slip.
Manou is the man likely to see least action of the Aussies’ 16-man touring party.
As back-up to first choice wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, the South Australian is expected to spend the best part of July and August watching the Ashes from the pavilion, just as he is at Hove this week.
Manou, 30, said: “My philosophy and belief is to always pick your best keeper. What has changed over the last few years is Adam Gilchrist has been so brilliant with the bat as well, someone who can change a game.
“I have heard Matt Prior has an excellent average at No. 6. It would be pretty hard to go against that.
“It will come down to the English philosophy and what they want to do but if his glovework is standing up it would be pretty tough for him to miss out.”
Manou is not worried about a predicted lack of inactivity over the next few weeks. He said: “I can watch and learn so much from this tour.”
