Another glorious morning at Hove saw Sussex lose the toss and asked to field.
It seemed like an excellent toss to win as the Somerset opening pair in Trescothick and Suppiah went about a century opening stand on an excellent Hove wicket. Suppiah eventually fell one short of his half century, trapped lbw by new boy Chawla, leaving Somerset 138 for 1.
Then the wickets started to fall. Hildreth barely troubled the scorers before he was brilliantly bowled by Chawla for 2.
Trescothick was showing what a class player he is and went on to make 100 before a mix up led to him being run out for 109 by Jason Lewry.
As the afternoon wore on the wickets continued to fall. Justin Langer fell cheaply trapped lbw by Chawla and Keiswetter soon followed after he edged to Prior again off the little Indian leg spinner.
De Bruyn was the only other batsman to offer resistance with a 50 before he again fell to Chawla after he edged a catch to Andrew Hodd close to the bat.
Chris Nash then got in on the act and bowled Thomas for 4, leaving Somerset 240 for 7.
Waller and Trego then staged a mini fight back before the new ball was taken and Jason Lewry came into play. Lewry bowled Waller for 15 and then claimed the wicket of Stiff for 4 - again bowling the Somerset batsman.
Somerset finished day one 314 for 9 with Trego still at the wicket 50 not out. All in all a successful day for Sussex with Chawla again proving he is a class act and a worthwhile signing.

It was really happy to read that Piyush Chawla is giving his best performance for Sussex County. I remembered my old days for playing for the same county thanks to my god father Jamsaheb ( Prince Sat-Shatrushalyasinhji). I have really enjoyed mine two years with 2nd XI and four years with 1st XI. I was awarded county cap for the first year and fortunate to capture first wicket with very first ball for first two years playing for second XI and also to play with players like John Snow, Tony Greig, Tony and Mike Buss, Peter Graves, Mike Griffith, Ted Dexter,John Spencer, Paul Philipson, John Barkley etc. Please convey my best wishes to Piyush Chawla and good luck to Sussex Team.
