Gilligan still standing strong-ish
The first phase of the Ground Development has really kicked in over the past couple of days, with the start of the demolition of the much loved eyesore that is the Gilligan Stand.
Many will have fond memories of countless days sitting in the sun and watching the cricket at Hove from the quite unique elevated view from behind the bowler’s arm at the Sea End. However, with the first phase of the ground development getting in to swing, the Gilligan is on its way down.
The building was scheduled to be completely demolished by close of play on Tuesday, but it’s not going down without a fight. Work on the historic stand has been disrupted due to the adverse weather conditions and the stand still stands strong – although with a good percentage of its behind missing!!
Depending upon weather conditions, the stand is now scheduled to be flattened tomorrow, which will make a real difference to The County Ground as we know it.
Dave Brooks, Chief Executive, said: “Whilst we started work at the North End of the ground a month ago, many of our supporters and members will only now truly realise that change is upon us. For many, the Gilligan Stand was an ugly eyesore - though for those who loved to sit on top of it and watch the cricket, it was a treasured area. And then there were those Sussex legends that learnt their game in the nets which used to be housed in the Stand, so today is a day when we remember our history but also look to the future.”
