Hoppo takes ton off Aussies

Sussex draw with the mighty Australia

Sussex batsman Carl Hopkinson scored a hundred as the tour match against Australia ended in a draw at Hove today.

The 27-year-old, who has only made one first-class century, scored 115 as Sussex finished on 373-7 in pursuit of a target of 418.

Although the county never seriously threatened to record what would have been their third win in this fixture it was a memorable day for Hopkinson who struck 13 fours and three sixes in just under three hours at the crease.

Mike Yardy (67) established a platform in an opening stand of 86 with Chris Nash before Hopkinson took charge in front of a 6,000 crowd.

He added 81 with Luke Wright (35) - a new Sussex record for the fifth wicket against Australia - and there were good contributions from Ed Joyce (34) and Robin Martin-Jenkins, who finished 37 not out.

Congrats to Hoppo on a very entertaining innings. Such a pity it won't count as a first-class hundred.

Well done Hoppo - fantastic stuff, but what about some rare applause for Andy Hodd who played both innings with great authority and maturity. Sussex second innings 37no to go with his first innings of 40 plus a couple of notable scalps behind the wicket, and a sore throat for his trouble. Wake up Sussex - we will lose Andy to another county unless this talented young man is given greater recognition and equal standing with Prior. What does he have to do to get recognition as a first team regular - with or without Prior? Let them share the responsibility wicket keeping through the season, but play them both. It might help them both focus on their batting talents, as well as tighten up their keeper skills.
