Sussex pass on congratulations to former skipper
Sussex CCC is delighted to pass on its congratulations to former captain, John Barclay, who has been nominated as the president of Marylebone Cricket Club.
At the MCC’s AGM, John was appointed by the current president Derek Underwood and will start his one-year term of office on October 1, 2009.
John made his debut for Sussex against Glamorgan, aged only 16, in 1972 and played county cricket until 1986 – scoring 1,000 runs in a season on four consecutive seasons from 1976. He was appointed captain in 1981 and led Sussex to second place in the Championship.
After his retirement from first class cricket, John managed two England major tours overseas and became director of cricket and Coaching for the Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation.
John is currently Chairman of the Sussex Cricket Board, which is responsible for the recreational game and is also on the Board at Sussex CCC, where he chairs the Cricket committee.
Jim May, Sussex CCC Chairman, said: “Johnny Barclay is a hugely popular and highly respected figure throughout the world of cricket. In Sussex, we are very lucky to have his major input in the county at all levels from youngsters to the professional cricket team.
“On behalf of the Sussex Cricket family, our congratulations go to Johnny on this well deserved honour.”
