Owain Jones, John Glover, Hannah Phelps and Lucy Uncles have all been awarded places on to the Academy.
Jones, a left-handed batsman and medium paced bowler, earns his place after impressing with the under 17s, with a top score of 194 not out against Surrey, whilst Glover, a right-arm fast bowler and hard-hitting lower order batsman, impressed playing a year above his age group and opening the bowling for the under 17s all year. He was also called up to the Second XI towards the end of last season and impressed there.
Lucy Uncles plays for Brighton & Hove and has played for the Sussex senior side for the past three seasons. She captained the under 17 Sussex side last year, which reached the final of the County Championship and she has been junior The Rubies Super 4’s captain for the past two years. She has also played basketball for England Under 18s.
Hannah Phelps plays for Horsham and played her first senior game last season. She was part of Sussex Under 17s last season, who reached the County Championship final and has been playing in the junior Super 4’s for the last two seasons.
2009 saw Luke Wells and Matt Machan succeed in making the progression from the Academy in earning Summer and Junior Pro contracts respectively. The Academy has now started a new cycle with so many fresh faces.
Jack Parsons, Adam Davies and Devon Endersby all retain their place for the 2010 season.
Keith Greenfield, Cricket Performance Manager, said: “After three months of trials we are now in a position to announce the Academy for 2010. It’s exciting to have a new bunch of players and they will bring an energetic boost to the Academy and its programme. We are of course pleased to continue the development of the three players that have been retained. We are delighted that Machan and Wells have been rewarded with contracts and this surely will give encouragement and an additional incentive to the latest crop.”
