An initial shortlist of five, thought to include former skipper Chris Adams, was whittled down to two and an offer has been made to the successful candidate.
Chairman Jim May said: “We had some outstanding candidates and have now offered a contract to the successful person. All being well, we will be able to make an announcement at the beginning of December.”
May’s old job as club treasurer has been taken by Simon Crundwell, a senior director of RBS and a member of Bognor CC.
May added: “With the signings of Ed Joyce and Yasir Arafat all the building blocks are in place for cricket but the pieces are coming together off the field as well.”
Meanwhile, Sussex have warned supporters that next season’s fixture list is unlikely to be finalised for at least another month because the ECB still do not know who will be touring in the first half of the summer.
Sri Lanka are set to pull out because most of their players are taking part in the Indian Cricket League. West Indies are their likely replacements but a itinerary for their tour has to be ratified.
Sussex’s only confirmed fixture is the four-day game against Australia at the end of June but the county are planning festival weeks at Horsham and Arundel.
May said: “This has presented us with a lot of logisitcal problems but there isn’t much we can do about it.”
